Many football fans felt that Alan Shearer could have achieved greater successes and won more trophies if he joined a bigger English club. Despite that, Shearer was still one of the greatest strikers in English football. His records spoke for himself, including the most goals in Premier League history (260 league goals), most goals in a Premier League season (34) and most hat tricks (11).
1996 was Shearer’s most productive year. The complete striker clinched the Premier League Golden Boot, followed by another top scorer award at the UEFA European Championship. His outstanding performances earned him the Bronze awards in the World Footballer of the Year as well as the Ballon d’Or.
Shearer was well-known for his loyalty. He joined his boyhood club Newcastle United in 1996 for a world record fee of £15 million, playing for them for 10 season till his retirement. Shearer’s leadership on the field was also demonstrated through his captaincy for both Newcastle and England in the late nineties and 2000s.
