The versatile Philipp Lahm was one of the best defenders in modern football era. Although right footed, the one club man and former national team captain could play as a left back as well as his preferred right back position, providing support and assists in both flanks with his pace, technique and acute tactical awareness.

Lahm represented the German national team in three World Cups, starting from the 2006 one. In 2014, he captained Germany to ultimate victory in the world’s biggest football tournament. At the peak of his glory, Lahm chose to retire from the national team, with 113 caps and five goals.

Three years later, Lahm hanged up his boots and retired from professional football, at an age of only 33 years old. He had played for 15 seasons at Bayern Munich, and had won countless trophies for the German giant. Many fans expressed disappointment at his decision as they felt Lahm could continue to play and contribute at the highest level for many more years. This reaction from the fans was perhaps the best testimonial to a great player.
