Paolo Maldini was one of most composed and stylish left backs in football. Playing for more than two decades, Maldini had won everything in club honours with AC Milan, his one and only club. That included seven Scudetto and five Champions League trophies! When Maldini finally retired at 41 years old, he was also the player with the most appearances for AC Milan as well as the Serie A – having played an amazing 902 (all competitions) and 647 matches (Serie A).
Well known for his professionalism, loyalty and leadership, Maldini’s biggest regret was perhaps the failure to clinch the biggest prizes in the international level. Italy finished as runner ups in both the 1994 World Cup and 2000 European Championship. When Italy finally won the World Cup again in 2006, Maldini had already retired from the national team, having amassed a total of 126 caps – third in Italian all-time record, behind only Gianluigi Buffon (176) and Fabio Cannavaro (136).
