Blessed with a lethal left foot, Davor Šuker, widely regarded as the best Croatian footballer ever, had his golden period in the late nineties. He had joined Spain’s Sevilla in 1991, due to the chaotic war situation in his native Croatia. In the La Liga, Šuker consistently scored and after five seasons at Sevilla, earned a move to Spanish giant Real Madrid.

After scoring more than 40 goals for Real Madrid in two seasons, Šuker participated in the 1998 World Cup and had his best ever moment. Debutant and underdog Croatia surprisingly charged into the semi-finals, finishing in the third place. Šuker led the team’s offense and scored six goals in seven matches, winning the tournament’s top scorer award.

After the World Cup, Šuker played for Real Madrid for one more season before trying out English and German football. He retired in 2003 and is currently serving as the president of the Croatian Football Federation.
