Regarded as the greatest Mexican player of all time, Hugo Sánchez was truly a prolific striker with a fierce left footed shot. Having scored more than 480 goals in his career, Sánchez’s peaks came between 1985 and 1990, when he played for Real Madrid and won five consecutive La Liga titles. In each of the five seasons with the Spanish giant, he finished as the league’s Pichichi (top scorer), even helping himself with the European Golden Shoe award in 1990. When he finished his Spanish venture, Sánchez was the fourth highest scorer in the La Liga history, ranked just behind Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and Telmo Zarra.
Despite little success with Mexico, Sánchez did play in three World Cups (1978, 1986, 1994) in a long international career that spanned across two decades. With 29 international goals to his name, Sánchez was the joint-eighth top scorer for Mexico.
