There was a saying in football: Maradona Good, Pele Better, George Best! That was the high regard and respect George Best’s fans had given him.
An extremely talented player blessed with pace, dribbling and an eye for goal, Best was the best winger Manchester United ever had before Ryan Giggs. In his 11-season with the club, the flamboyant Best helped the Red Devils won two league titles and the European Cup. Lethal from midfield, he had a respectable 137 league goals in 361 appearances.
Despite being the best player ever to come out of Northern Ireland, Best could not help his nation qualify for the World Cup. Bothered by extravagant lifestyle and alcohol in the later part of his career, Best’s football career declined rapidly and he quitted Manchester United at an age of only 27. The alcoholism also led to the failure of his organs and eventually his death in 2005.
