Widely regarded as the best footballer ever, Diego Maradona was a flawed genius that could single-handedly win a match on his own. At his peak, he led Napoli to their only two Scudettos (1987, 1990) in their entire history, and in 1986, he led Argentina to World Cup glory. In one of the games against England, Maradona scored the most controversial goal (dubbed Hand of God) and the best goal (solo run from own half) in World Cup history.

Maradona smashed two world transfer records in the early eighties – first to Barcelona in 1982 for £5 million, then to Napoli in 1984 for £6.9 million. After scoring 115 goals in 259 matches for Napoli, he left to play in the La Liga for another season before returning home to play for Newell’s Old Boys and Boca Juniors.

Maradona’s 91-cap international career with Argentina, however, almost ended in disgrace after failing the drug tests several times in the nineties. The consistent drug abuse even endangered his life, but Maradona recovered and made a comeback in the football scene by becoming the manager of his beloved Argentina national squad in 2008. He died of a heart attack in November 2020, at age 60.
