One of the best playmakers the world has ever seen, the tall graceful Algerian-born French midfielder had superb ball control, dribbling skills and the ability to make defense-splitting passes to his strikers. In 2001, Zidane became the world’s most expensive player when Real Madrid bought him for £45.6 million as an integral part of their Galacticos team.
Zidane belonged to a small group of players who have won everything at the highest level in football. In his 19-year career, he won numerous league titles and the Champions Leagues with Juventus and Real Madrid. With France, he led the national team to dominate the world football from the late nineties to the early 2000s, clinching victories in the World Cup and European Championship.
However, it was a sad end to his football career when he got sent off in the 2006 World Cup final after headbutting Italian defender Marco Materazzi. Italy went on to win the World Cup through penalties, and Zidane retired from football shortly after the end of the tournament.
