Nicknamed “The Maradona of the Carpathians”, Gheorghe Hagi was considered the greatest footballer from Romania. Playing mainly as the playmaker, Hagi had nifty footwork and great visions on the field, as well as superb techniques in passing and freekicks.
Shining at Romanian club Steaua Bucuresti, where he won three league titles, Hagi went on to play for both Real Madrid and Barcelona in the nineties, one of the few players in history to have played for the two bitter rivals.
As Romania’s joint all-time top scorer with second all-time appearances, Hagi played in three consecutive World Cups from 1990 to 1998. In the 1994 World Cup, he scored three goals and led Romania to their best ever position, charging into the quarter finals but was defeated by Sweden in the penalty shootouts.
