Iker Casillas was the classic story of a home grown young player developed into a club legend. When he was made a regular goalkeeper for Real Madrid in the late nineties and early 2000s, he was part of the club’s ambitious policy of “Zidanes y Pavones“, where the team was made up of Galacticos and potential youngsters graduated from the Real Madrid B and C teams.

Extremely agile, alert and composed, Casillas established himself firmly as the team’s number one for the next 15 seasons, clocking up more than 700 appearances. Overall, including Porto and Spain, Casillas played over 1,000 matches, an amazing and rare feat for a footballer.

Casillas was also the undisputed starting goalkeeper for Spain, helping the national team to clinch two European Championship and one World Cup between 2008 and 2012. He retired in 2016 with 167 caps, an all-time appearance record for Spain. Named the World’s Best Goalkeeper for five times, Casillas was indeed one of world’s best goalkeepers in the modern era.
