A role model in football, Javier Zanetti was professional, loyal and reliable for Inter Milan, playing for the Italian giant for almost 19 seasons. The club in turn rewarded his service by retiring his number 4 jersey in 2015.
Zanetti’s strengths lie in his versatility. His main position on the field was right back, but he was equally comfortable and capable of playing at the left back, defensive midfielder and even the winger positions. Zanetti’s 19 seasons with Inter Milan yielded an incredible 858 appearances in all competitions, a club record, and five Scudetto, a Champions League and many more domestic cup trophies.
Gaining 143 caps, Zanetti was Argentina’s second most capped player after Javier Mascherano. One of his most memorable goals for the national team was against England in the 1998 World Cup, where he finished off a stunning freekick move that tricked all the English players.
