The elegant and composed Alessandro Nesta, famous for his acute positional awareness and well-timed tackles, formed one of the best defensive lineups for AC Milan in the early 2000s, playing alongside fellow defenders Paolo Maldini, Cafu and defensive midfielder Gennaro Gattuso. AC Milan’s strong defence allowed the team to complete on both domestic and European stage, winning one Scudetto and two Champions Leagues during their times together at the club.

With 75 caps, Nesta was also a regular for the Italian team, forming a formidable partnership with Fabio Cannavaro in the mid-2000s. The 2006 World Cup was the highlight of his international career, although he was injured and had to miss the knockout games after the group stages. The injuries would plague Nesta at the end of his playing career, where he would move on from the physically demanding Italian Serie A to play a brief stint at the Canadian and Indian leagues.
