The flamboyant and versatile Zico, nicknamed “White Pele”, was a player who could do it all. On the field, he could play as a playmaker, winger and forward, and was greatly admired by many for his superb skills in dribbling, passing and freekicks, as well as his prolific finishing and spectacular goals – he scored an amazing 477 goals in 700 matches in his football career, plus another 48 for the Brazilian national team.
Zico played in three World Cups in 1978, 1982 and 1986. Even though he did not lead Brazil to World Cup triumph, he was one of the best players in the world in the early eighties, when, for several seasons, he was the top scorer in Brazil and was the South American Footballer of the Year.
After hanging up his boots, Zico went on to manage numerous clubs. He was also appointed as Japan’s national coach from 2002 to 2006.
