One of the most prolific goalscorers in football history, Gunnar Nordahl was also one of Italian Serie A’s most successful imports. After 12 seasons in the Swedish league, scoring almost a goal per match, Nordahl joined AC Milan in 1949.
At Serie A, Nordahl won a record five top scorer awards, and was AC Milan’s all-time record goalscorer with an incredible 210 goals in 257 appearances. His goalscoring record for a single Italian club was maintained for more than 60 years until it was broken by Francesco Totti (for Roma) in 2012.
Nordahl had an outstanding record for Sweden too. He scored 43 goals in only 33 caps, and helped Sweden clinch the Olympic gold medal in 1948. However, his transfer to Serie A prevented him from being called up to the Sweden national team, and he subsequently missed the chance to shine in the 1950 World Cup.
