Paraguay’s captain goalkeeper José Luis Chilavert became well-known among the global football fans during the 1998 World Cup, when he almost thwarted France’s advances in the round of 16 match with many world class saves. The eccentric and fiery goalkeeper delighted the fans during the tournament whenever he charged upfront to take the free kicks at the opponent’s half of the field.
But Chilavert was indeed a specialist in set pieces. He was in fact the second highest goalscoring goalkeeper in football history after Brazilian goalkeeper Rogerio Ceni. In his career, Chilavert scored 67 goals, mostly made up of penalties and freekicks, including eight in international games. His best output was during his stint at Argentine club Vélez Sarsfield, where he helped himself with 48 goals in 340 matches.
Chilavert won the world’s best goalkeeper awards in 1995, 1997 and 1998.
