Before his records were overtaken by Wayne Rooney in 2013 and 2017 respectively, Bobby Charlton was England and Manchester United’s top scorer for many decades. One of the finest midfielders England ever produced, Charlton began his football career at Manchester United and spent almost 19 years at the same club, amassing a total of 758 appearances, a record that was only bettered by another Manchester United legend Ryan Giggs.

Attacking-minded and possessing a fierce long range shot, Charlton led Manchester United rising from its decline after the Munich air disaster in 1958. During his peak in the 1960s, Charlton captained his beloved club to numerous glories, but his biggest triumph was leading England to its only World Cup victory in 1966.

Since retirement, Charlton stayed briefly in club management. In 1984, he returned to his favourite club Manchester United as part of the board of directors.
