It almost caused a riot among the Barcelona fans in 2000 when bitter rival Real Madrid poached Luis Figo as part of their Galacticos team. It was then an eye-popping world record fee of £37 million for the Portuguese winger, who possessed natural leadership, superb dribbling skills and crossing technique. Figo became one of the very few players, in the La Liga’s history, to have played for both Spanish giants. He won a total of four league titles for both Barcelona and Real Madrid.

An integral member of Portugal’s famous golden generation, Figo almost led his national team to European glory in 2004, only to be defeated in a shock defeat by underdog Greece in the tournament’s final. He was Portugal’s most capped player – with 127 caps – until Cristiano Ronaldo overtook his record.
