Germany and Bayern Munich legend Gerd Müller was one of the most prolific footballers in history. In his 15 seasons with the German giant, he scored an incredible 398 goals in 453 league games. For (West) Germany, he had an even more astonishing record – 68 international goals in 62 caps – one of the few players in the world who had scored more goals than caps.
The seventies truly belonged to Müller. He was consistently the top scorer in the German league, as well as the top scorer in the European Cup for four seasons (1973, 1974, 1975, 1977). For his goalscoring records, he was awarded the European Golden Shoe twice, in 1970 and 1972.
On the international stage, Müller also plundered goals after goals. In the 1970 World Cup, Müller scored 10 goals to lift the Golden Boot award, but West Germany would only finish in third place. Müller finally realised his dream of winning the World Cup trophy in 1974. He finished third, with four goals, in the tournament’s top scorer chart.
