1992/1993 World’s Best Goalkeeper of the Year
In 1991, Manchester United bought a relatively unknown goalkeeper from Brondby for about £570,000. It turned out to be one of the best bargains ever. At 1.93m and 95kg, Peter Schmeichel was a monster guarding between the goal posts. His reflexes and agility were excellent for such a gigantic person, thwarting countless one on ones by opponent strikers. Schmeichel’s giant kicks up the field and long throws to the opponents’ half were famous as well, often leading to quick counterattacks for the Red Devils.
Regarded as the best goalkeeper during his times, Schmeichel’s proudest moments came in 1992 and 1999 respectively, when he led the underdog Denmark to the European Championship glory, and clinched a prestigious treble (Premier League title, FA Cup and Champions League) with Manchester United.
