The most important player in the famous Dutch Total Football, Johan Cruyff was responsible in bringing Ajax to its peak in the club history, claiming an incredible three peat in the European Cup in the early seventies. In his two stints with the Dutch club, Cruyff scored some 204 league goals in 276 games, help Ajax to also claim eight Dutch league titles. In 2007, Ajax retired his number 14 jersey in his honour.

Moving overseas to play for Barcelona, Cruyff also had some success, winning a La Liga title. At international level, Cruyff led Holland to the World Cup final in 1974 but was stopped by Germany. Nevertheless, he still achieved the Golden Ball for being the best player in the tournament.

After his retirement as a player, Cruyff took charge of Ajax and Barcelona, continuing his Total Football philosophy that has its impact still felt today. In 2009, he was named as the head coach of the “national” team of Spain’s Catalonian region.
