Despite not winning many trophies for Inter Milan – it was then the golden period for bitter rival AC Milan – Giuseppe Bergomi was still considered one of the best Italian defenders of his generation. A hard tackler, versatile professional and no-nonsense player, Bergomi played primarily as the right back, but was also equally comfortable as the centre defender. His versatility even saw him occasionally deployed as the left back.
After playing 10 seasons, Bergomi finally helped Inter Milan win the Scudetto. It was his one and only Serie A league title with the club he had played for his entire football career. Inter Milan had more successes in Europe, having won the UEFA Cup three times in the nineties.
For Italy, an 18-year-old Bergomi shared the joy with his country by winning the 1982 World Cup. He would come close again in 1990, when Italy clinched a third place position in the world’s biggest football tournament. After playing in four World Cups and gaining 81 caps, Bergomi would retire in 1998, at an age of 35.
