The only African player to win the prestigious Ballon d’Or and FIFA World Player of the Year awards, George Weah was indeed one of the greatest names in football to emerge from Africa onto the world stage. Fast, strong and a deadly finisher in front of the goal, Weah started his career at Liberia, Ivory Coast and Cameroon clubs, before taking his talents to the European leagues.

In Europe, Weah had played in France, Italy and England. Monaco manager Arsène Wenger spotted his talents in 1988 and brought him to the French league. But Weah’s brightest moments were at AC Milan in the late nineties, where he played alongside the likes of Paolo Maldini, Demetrio Albertini, Roberto Baggio, Zvonimir Boban and Leonardo. In total, he scored 58 in 147 games for the Italian giant, helping it to clinch two Scudetto.

Weah hung up his boots at age 37, after which he entered politics. In 2017, he became the President of Liberia.
